The most popular road to travel in Victoria and maybe Australia is the Great Ocean Road. There is so much to see and the best way to travel is definitely by car because you can forget about a quite tour coach experience where you have to stand in line for a nice panoramic picture.
The Great Ocean road has some amazing attractions like the bays and rockformations of the Campbell National Park. Though the beginning of the Great Ocean Road, just after the town of Warrnambool isn't too exciting and you might start to ask yourself wheather you've missed the right exit. The first bit of The Great Ocean Road looks like farmer land with lots of cows, farms and grass lands, nice but not what you came to see!
The good part starts after passing the small town of Peterborough. In direction of Port Campbell and its world famous Campbell National Park you'll encounter attractions like The Grotto, The Arch and Mutton Bird Island.
The best thing is to drive The Great Ocean road in the early morning because making stops every 200 meters, signs will be posted alongside the road, you will spend a lot of time wowing and making photos. You do want to get to the 12 apostles before dark and believe me, driving from there to the next town will also take a while with all the curvy roads and frustrating slow campers. Make sure to get to the 12 apostles around 5 or 6 pm max to get some great pictures of the sun setting over these amazing rock formations. This way you'll have enough time to drive to Apollo Bay.
Apollo Bay is the first good sleepover option on the Great Ocean Road and a very clean, friendly and relaxing place. There is a lot of choice in accomodation from hotel rooms and appartments to nice cabins on the beach. The beach is lovely and not crowded like its sister Lorne more north. You will be able to have breakfast on the benches located in front of the oceans while pink parrots are looking for a bite too. If you're lucky you will even catch the local markets. If you don't Apollo Bay is filled with nice restaurants, bars and places to sit down to have lunch.
From Apollo Bay to Lorne the roads gets a bit more difficult thats why the best thing is to sleep in Apollo Bay before driving straight from the 12 apostles to Lorne. Especially the road around Cape Otway is steep and very curvy so be prepared to lose a lot of time on your schedule here.
Lorne is a nice beach town with lots of tourists, facilities and a very vivid esplanade filled with bars and icecreameries trying to attract the many kids playing around. In spring and summer times its a lovely place eventhough parking can be a bit of a battle. I suggest you stop here for a drink or an icecream and head to Torquay.
Personally I loved the stops and lookouts of the Campbell National Park but driving the part from Apollo Bay to Lorne is the best! You can see the ocean from the road without having to exit the main highway and the views are just stunning, way to gorgeous to drive this part at night!
